Case Study: Capturing TASO's National Conference at Warwick University
Authentic, story-driven photography for impactful events
For the third year running, I was commissioned to photograph TASO’s annual conference, where professionals from universities across the UK come together to share ideas and insights. Each year, the event is held at a different venue — and this year it took place at the impressive conference centre The Slate at Warwick University.
My Approach to Conference Photography
Photographing conferences is about more than just documenting — it’s about telling the story of the day in a way that feels vibrant, human, and honest.
Most events have similar core photography needs, such as:
- Keynote speakers and panel discussions
- Attendees networking and in conversation
- Workshop sessions and hands-on activities
- Audience engagement and reactions
- Capturing the atmosphere of the venue
To tell that story well, I focus on natural, candid shots, and use a variety of angles and compositions — wide, medium, and close-up — to build a dynamic visual narrative.
How I Work on the Day
I aim to be friendly, discreet, and respectful at all times. My job is to blend in and make attendees feel at ease — not distracted or uncomfortable.
Before the event, I:
- Research the venue and check photos of the layout, decor, and lighting
- Plan for possible challenges like low light or tight spaces
- Arrive early to scout locations, test ambient light, and meet the event team
During the event, I:
- Stay flexible and adapt to last-minute changes
- Build trust with attendees before photographing them
- Capture real moments, not just posed ones
Headshots & Team Photos
Conferences are also a great opportunity to take professional headshots for LinkedIn profiles or internal use. I often schedule these during breaks or lunch when time allows. A group team photo at the end of the day is always popular — it’s a great way to round off the day with a sense of togetherness.
